How can data ecosystems drive innovation, sustainability and competitiveness in the tourism sector?

On 10 June 2026, MetaHeritage will contribute to this important discussion during the event “Data Ecosystems for Smart Destinations”, taking place at the GaiásTech Centre in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

Bringing together representatives from public administrations, technology providers, research organisations and the tourism sector, the event will explore how data and digital technologies are reshaping the future of tourism destinations.

MetaHeritage will be represented by Eliane Van Branteghem, Project Manager at CRUSOE, who will participate in the round table discussion “Data Spaces for the Tourism Sector” alongside experts from AnySolution, Eurecat and Turismo de Galicia.

Exploring the Role of Data Spaces in Tourism

As destinations across Europe continue their digital transformation, the ability to collect, share and reuse data is becoming increasingly important for creating smarter, more connected and sustainable tourism ecosystems.

The event will examine key topics including:

  • Data spaces and their role in the tourism sector
  • Public-private collaboration and innovation
  • Digital transformation of destinations
  • Data-driven decision-making
  • Sustainable tourism development
  • Regional competitiveness and destination branding

Particular attention will be given to how data ecosystems can create value for destinations while fostering collaboration between public administrations, businesses, knowledge centres and local stakeholders.

Connecting Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Digital Innovation

The discussion aligns closely with the objectives of the MetaHeritage project, which seeks to strengthen the connection between cultural heritage, tourism and emerging digital technologies.

By supporting knowledge exchange, collaboration and innovation, MetaHeritage aims to help organisations better understand and leverage European digital ecosystems, including data spaces, virtual worlds and immersive technologies, to create new opportunities for cultural heritage and tourism actors.

Participation in events such as “Data Ecosystems for Smart Destinations” contributes to the project’s mission of building bridges between sectors and encouraging the adoption of innovative digital solutions that generate economic, social and cultural value.

The event offers a valuable opportunity to explore how data-driven approaches can support the development of smarter destinations and strengthen Europe’s digital tourism ecosystem.
